In addition to normal reunion activities, there were at least two special events at this reunion:
- The dedication of a bench on the “Korea IV” trail that we funded from Ghost Ranch to Lake Abiquiu — dedicated to our very own Dr. James Justice
- A recording of the 1st generation singing “Arirang,” led by John Carter, that we could send to Karen Boyle, who was at home caring for our colleague and her partner, Steve Dolan.
There are two still photos of the bench dedication further below on this page, but a 22-minute video of the ceremony recorded by Jim Justice’s son Sean is accessible through this link.
Those who attended that dedication ceremony may remember the paved road on which we drove across the plateau (or is it a valley floor?) from Hwy 84 to reach the trail bench. That road has been used by the Ranch for many years to get people (prior to our trail) and physical items such as kayaks to the lake. But its history includes use by a Steven Spielberg movie as a “level” surface along which a movie camera could travel while filming people riding on horses. If you want to see Sean’s 25-second video of the road, click here.
Sean recorded a third video — the singing of “Arirang” (the second bullet above). You can find that video (2:22 long) here.

Dedication of Trail Bench to Jim Justice
On the Korea IV-funded trail that had opened in 2017, this year we dedicated a bench to Dr. James Justice, the man who trained the original volunteers in public health in 1967 and then joined the volunteers for two years in South Korea.
Jim’s wife Angela promptly referred to the bench as the “Seat of Justice.”
The original version of the bench pictured here is wooden. It will be replaced with a more durable stone bench.
It is located about 100 yards up from the end of the trail at the lake.

Dedication of Memorial Plaque to John Grant at Campo Santo
Interested persons whose relative or close friend had a deep love for Ghost Ranch can purchase memorial plaques that are placed on a wall at Campo Santo, which is located on a side trail on the way to Box Canyon (see first photo below).
At this reunion, Joan Grant dedicated such a plaque to her late husband John, another of our Korea IV colleagues.
